The strange man smiled and bent to his case, which he was now buckling shut. The air seemed to whistle, and Tim felt lightheaded, disoriented. Blinking, Tim tried to remember the signs of a stroke or a heart attack. It took a second to pass, and when it did, Tim tried to put it out of his mind. The lawyer and photographer were satisfied, it seemed.

Confused, Tim did, however, ask the lawyer for her card, which she produced without hesitation. He read it to himself to drown out the low whistle-roar of his headache.

It checked out.
